Gotcha Week - Reflections (1)

First of all we want to say thank you so much for all the lovely Gotcha day comments yesterday AND we also got this super card from sweet Nellie Bellie!

Awww! Thank you Nellie ❤️

=^..^=

This week, in order to try and make up for forgetting Austin's 8th Gotcha day (Nov 1st) I shall be reposting a few of the earliest blog posts I wrote.

The best place to start, so they say, is at the beginning! So here is my very first blog post from 23rd March 2008. You will notice that I had the audacity to actually write it in my own voice! This was way before I realised that cats did blogging and actually had quite a lot to say!

Austin - aged 7 mths (approx)
Well what can I say? It was a damp, dark late October day in 2007 that I accidentally picked up this young fellow from the RSPCA rescue centre in Colwyn. I say “accidentally” because I went there to get a dog! However, all they had there at the time were 7 dalmatians and a suspect pit bull terrier cross. Crossed with what? I have no idea - and that is a cul de sac I will not venture down.

On the way out I popped into the cat section and that was my first mistake. One couldn’t fail to notice this little tuxie. He was making a big fuss trying to climb up the glass cage thingy that was his jail. “Ahhhhh he senses my feline empathy” I thought and that was my second mistake! All he wanted, it transpired, was to head straight out the door and up the A55 to Rhyl, Chester and all points east!
It seems that Austin was a stray found a few weeks before, injured and keeping warm inside a car engine - hence the name! Yep, he’s named after a car, not the place in Texas.

We don't know what traumas he suffered, except that one of his back legs was badly broken. Whether someone tried to start the car I don't know! Good news is he’s mended very well, except for a "bumpy" hip. We were told he would make a good indoor cat because he would probably be lacking in the necessary agility needed to make it in the big outdoors. Yeah right!

It took a few days to close the deal, but soon I was able to bring him home and that was how it all began.....
=^..^=

audacity, audaciousness - bare-faced cheek i.e. beardless

  1. It's always good to hear the backstory. You chose a good home, Austin. We had no idea about your leg though... ouch! Our Toby was found in a car engine on a cold day too, 3 weeks old, but thankfully no damage except for some oil residue.

  2. Austin, the same thing happened to us when we first started blogging. The mom actually thought she would do all the talking...but we quickly changed that!

We're glad you got gotted. Being in a car engine is no place for a kitty.

  7. Wow, Nellie is a beauty! Mum used to have 2 Siamese many moons ago.
What an interesting story, poor Austin, I have heard of lots of cats who try to get warm in car engines.
Lucky for him there were no suitable dogs, bet he is better behaved anyway ;)

  9. Dear Austin.........I know your Mom celebrates your GOTCHA DAY with a smile on her face since YOU certainly knew she was "the one" at the shelter didn't you?! You weren't about to let her slip through your paws. Well, we celebrated your GOTCHA at Cat Scouts too and everyone wished you a super GOTCHA - just as I am doing here............HAPPY GOTCHA DAY friend Austin!

  12. Hi Austin! Glad your mom is finally recognizing your gotcha day. I came with a broken leg, too, AND a broken tail that had to be partially amputated. My leg is fine now although it does hurt on occasion when mom tries to move me off of her in certain ways. Love your picture with Nellie!

  24. Well, I *guuuuueeeeeeessssssss* my peace on earth extends to you, my Buddy, my Pal, my Competition. That *is* a prettycute story your secretary told ^^^ up there. The Human gotted all leaky thinking of you with a smashed up leg and stuff, but *I* am not so sentimental, not by a long shot. You gotta check yourself before you wreck yourself.

Now, let's forget about those girlcats and go get a tall cold one.

  29. Happy belated Gotcha Day. My mom didn't know what Gotcha Days were until recently. She gave us all birthdays and celebrated those. You have a great gotcha day story. You certainly chose a nice human to bestow the honor of caring for you.

BTW -- mum says that she used to have two Tuxedo cats (Alpha and Omega) that she got when she lived in New Jersey. They moved with her to Connecticut and to Tucson (by way of staying in Indiana for a month!!) and staying in Chicago for a while before Uncle Vic moved down here!!
