Remember, Remember ....

"Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot..."

Way, way back in 1605, on the 5th November, this geezer Guy Fawkes and some mates were caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament in London with several dozen barrels of gunpowder. It seems they were rather peeved because the King, James 1st, was Protestant when they wanted a Catholic king. They thought they would blow up parliament to make their point. Do you know? Things haven't really changed that much! People are still trying to kill each other all over the place :(

Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried as a traitor with his co-conspirators for plotting against the government. He was tried in London by a Judge Popham. He was sentenced to death and the form of the execution was one of the most horrendous ever practised (hung, drawn and quartered) which reflected the serious nature of the crime of treason.

What really, really gets my goat here is that ever since then, on and around 5th November, people have bonfires and let off really really noisy fireworks at all hours of the night. Some of them even burn effigies of Guy Fawkes, though that was more when The Staff was a little girl, in, like, 1606!

Between you and me, I spend an awful lot of time UTB this time of year!

  3. Well Austin, that doesn't sound like any fun at all. Hope it is all over very soon. It must get boring under that bed. Take good care.

  4. We hate November 5th too although by now usually there are fireworks days before this. Unfortunately Mum's bed has drawers underneath which makes getting under it impossible! She has to sit in the chair with both of us holding on tight to her which leaves her with thigh perforations!

  10. The fireworks are not close to us, so that means the booms are not very loud. This is very fortunate as the bed has drawers and I have yet to discover a way to get under a one inch gap.

  13. I hope the loud noises don't last too long. Some humans have a strange fascination with making things go boom!

  14. Hope it wasn't too scary for you, Austin. They were very loud here. Silly humans. Why do they have to make so much noise? I stayed safe indoors with my mum.

  29. Glad to hear you were safe under the bed Austin. Dip pretty much ignores them but Elliot gets very agitated when he hears the fireworks.
You were right - you would consider our new family member lunch, LOL.
