"Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot..."
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot..."
Way, way back in 1605, on the 5th November, this geezer Guy Fawkes and some mates were caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament in London with several dozen barrels of
gunpowder. It seems they were rather peeved because the King, James 1st, was Protestant when they wanted a Catholic king. They thought they would blow up parliament to make their point. Do you know? Things haven't really changed that much! People are still trying to kill each other all over the place :(
Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried as a traitor with his
co-conspirators for plotting against the government. He was tried in London by a Judge Popham. He was sentenced to death
and the form of the execution was one of the most horrendous ever practised
(hung, drawn and quartered) which reflected the serious nature of the crime of
treason.
What really, really gets my goat here is that ever since then, on and around 5th November, people have bonfires and let off really really noisy fireworks at all hours of the night. Some of them even burn effigies of Guy Fawkes, though that was more when The Staff was a little girl, in, like, 1606!
Between you and me, I spend an awful lot of time UTB this time of year!

safe = Under The Bed
=^..^=
Tonight is a hide behind the sofa night for us Austin. Have a wonderful Wednesday and stay safe.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
Austin, I love your word of the day. Stay safe, dear friend.
ReplyDeleteYour tux looks extra sharp in this picture.
Purrs,
Annie
P.s. Thanks for the history tidbit and we liked your peace post from yesterday.
Well Austin, that doesn't sound like any fun at all. Hope it is all over very soon. It must get boring under that bed. Take good care.
ReplyDeleteWe hate November 5th too although by now usually there are fireworks days before this. Unfortunately Mum's bed has drawers underneath which makes getting under it impossible! She has to sit in the chair with both of us holding on tight to her which leaves her with thigh perforations!
ReplyDeleteLuv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
You better get your hiding place ready
ReplyDeleteSnorts,
Lily & Edward
That is one British holiday my human does not get! I'm glad it is not celebrated here - sounds noisy and annoying for kitties.
ReplyDeleteAustin you stay safe and so will we.
ReplyDeleteMake sure your human has some delectable edibles and toys to help pass the time while you are in the "safe" Austin! :)

ReplyDeleteEek! Another boomy-night? Humans and their excuses - and penchant for NOISY things! Grrrrrr.....
ReplyDeleteHope ya stay safe tonight.
ReplyDeleteThose things always send us scooting too!
ReplyDeleteThe fireworks are not close to us, so that means the booms are not very loud. This is very fortunate as the bed has drawers and I have yet to discover a way to get under a one inch gap.
ReplyDeleteWe hate the noisy boomers too, Austin. Stay UTB until they're all done.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I forget this is your fireworks day. Stay safe my friend!
ReplyDeleteMarty
I hope the loud noises don't last too long. Some humans have a strange fascination with making things go boom!
ReplyDeleteHope it wasn't too scary for you, Austin. They were very loud here. Silly humans. Why do they have to make so much noise? I stayed safe indoors with my mum.
ReplyDeletePurrs xx

ReplyDeleteYikes! Sounds like a scary day. Thanks for sharing the history behind it. Hope you made it through the night without too much scariness!
ReplyDeleteSweet Austin we are so sorry for all that noise and you having to spend a lot of time UTB. We are lucky here...there is no celebrating on election days. We enjoyed reading this post we had never heard about Guy Fawkes unless Mumsy is just so old she has forgotten. Hugs and nose kisses

ReplyDeleteWe miss you...
And thank you for saying those kind words about Buchi's passing.
Thanks for the history lesson. We didn't that. What a terrible way to die.
ReplyDeleteYikes... sounds like a horrible night for you. Best to stay under the bed and we hope that you are out by now and enjoying the weekend! Purrs from the Zee and Zoey Gang!
ReplyDeleteMr Poo, I remember well
ReplyDeleteOnce you used to get lose because of evil fireworks and your mom was so worry ! Yep..nothing fun with horrify noise. But this time, I'm glad you are safe at home :)

They finally seemed to have stopped here, but it's been a full week of booms and bangs
ReplyDeleteAll religion does is cause trouble and wars. Of course, this started over religion. Sigh. They’ll never learn. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteThat's a definition we can understand. Mom never knew what Guy Fawkes Day was all about. Thanks for the history lesson. Purrs and paw-pats, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you were safe under the bed Austin. Dip pretty much ignores them but Elliot gets very agitated when he hears the fireworks.
ReplyDeleteYou were right - you would consider our new family member lunch, LOL.
