The Raven

No! Not the interminable poem by Mr Poe. This is a similar one by Mr Poo!

Once upon a morning dreary, Austin pondered, cheeky, cheery,
Over many a pack of kibble, juicy salmon and much more.
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my glass back door.
"'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my glass back door'".
So Austin skipped across the floor!

Just to set the scene, this is what usually happens when birds visit the garden:
Austin the Brave Knave

But this is what happened today:
Austin the Wuss Puss

We do have big birds here. Ok, not condor big, but big enough! Herons, buzzards, shags and of course ravens. When we throw food out for the birds, they are generally quite grateful and come and flutter around the lawn. However, this morning I chucked out a stale scone the size and weight of a cricket ball and practically took out a whole flock of starlings. Therefore the only taker was Rodney the Raven who is the same size as Austin and was the only bird with the muscles to deal with it.

The secret of survival is knowing when to keep your head down!

  3. Austin. surely. that big crow didn't scare you a little. But we can't blame you, we sure wouldn't tackle one that big. So Mom took out a herd of starlings with a quite heavy scone. Silly birds. Too bad it didn't take out the crow. Have a great evening.

  6. Yikes, a bird as big as you Austin, with muscles to boot. Uh, I think I would hide from it and the scone! Stay safe Austin!

  7. Nice to meet you and Austin! Yes only the channel separates us, but with the Eurostar from Brussels I am in London in a little more than 1 1/2 h !
As I see you live up in Wales. Rosie makes the same big eyes as Austin when she sees a bird. We only have crows and magpies here, the little birds moved away !

  8. Who made the drawing of Austin the Wuss Puss? Lol, I love your poem Carolyn. Too bad you don't do it more often.

    Is that really a raven?

  9. Experienced felines like Austin know that certain situations are meant to be observed and pondered, one does not go bumbling in.

  10. Gattina, thanks for popping by :) We also have magpies! It takes more than twice as long as that to get from London to Anglesey!!!

Haopee, I just messed up a poem that was already writ - by Edgar Allen Poe :) I did the drawing of Austin, but Picassa did the rest lol

And yes that raven really was as big as Austin!!! lol

  12. LOL, Rodney the raven. Brill! Are crows and ravens similar in the U.K.? This could another version of the Cat and Crow book I reviewed ;-)

  13. Layla, it was definitely a raven, as it was significantly larger than a crow and a different sheen to its blackness. It would have made short work of Austin, that's for sure!

  14. Austin, you are simply showing your practical side. To vanquist the Raven, which you certainly would have done, no doubt, you would have had to get the chain saw out to quarter him into more grilling-sized proportions for the supper your mom and you would ultimately share. I say your discretion is admirable.

  16. Austin, as far as we're concerned, this won't go any further than us friends. Don't give it another thought. Just be thankful your human only threw out a scone... what if it had been a large loaf of bread or a whole cake?

  17. As a dog that's survived a fierce attack by rabid blue jays, I can certainly understand the hesitance.

  18. Carole, you're right. That would have been too much like hard work!!

Deb, I would have probably taken out half the village!!
